Photos shared during UCSD PhIG monthly meetings

19 Feb 2025 Passion Project/Minimalism: Jim

Last meeting, Jim shared ~10 favorite images of 2024. This month he shared several Passion Projects images – he has many ongoing eclectic projects. Trees – he loves photographing trees and the Salton Sea/Bombay Beach are just two continuing subjects he photographs. Minimalism is another genre he wanted to try after watching a YouTube video on long exposure black& white seascape photography. So during a recent La Jolla Cove meetup to photograph cormorants and pelicans, he brought a tripod and did some long exposure oceanscapes.

19 Feb 2025 Passion Project/Minimalism: Sharon

With the recent wildfires around SoCal, protecting your photographic memories is important. Sharon, during a recent potential evacuation order, found some old photos she printed when she was in college. She photographed the old matted prints using her cell phone camera and shared these wonderful images. Protecting and preserving your photography is something we photographers need to focus on.

19 Feb 2025 Passion Project/Minimalism: Mikky

Mikky has a future African safari trip planned so he’s been practicing with a new camera and 100-400mm zoom lens. Although mirrorless cameras and lenses are supposed to be smaller and lighter, his Nikon system will test his baggage packing efficiency. The airlines to Africa have difficult weight restrictions to meet. But when traveling on such a once-in-a-lifetime photography safari, you want to bring gear that will capture the best images. Here are his practice images, many from San Diego’s Safari Park. His male lion photos are a rarity since I’ve never seem him during my many visits.
