21 Jan 2026 Theme Travel; Landscapes/Oceanscapes: Gary

Gary has been re-processing some travel photos using Lightroom’s HDR feature to bring out more details and improve contast. His images show a definite improvement with better color and contrast. Gary’s favorite place to photograph is Yosemite, often visiting the national park a couple times a year. Climber’s, dwarfed on El Capitan, are a favorite subject to watch and photograph. The “John Muir trail up to Vernal Falls” image was reprocessed, a high contrast photo improved by using HDR. He also likes the illusion created by inverting a reflection photo when its clarity adds a twist to the image. A bald eagle collecting nest material was a lucky shoot-from-the-hip grab shot. Lastly, the vivid colors and chrome of an Australian steam locamotive were brought out using Lightroom’s HDR post-processing.

17 Dec 2025 Holidays, Weather, Portraits: Gary

Gary shared a recent moonrise photo taken earlier this month on his latest trip to Yosemite. Planning his shot using Photopills, he captured the moon rising in Yosemite Valley. He also shared some portraits from our Nov meetup at Old Town for Dios de los Muertos. Gary had some spectacular surf crashing against the coast from November’s King Tides event. Big waves combined with King Tides are the optimal conditions for showing the power of this event. Gary uses a Nikon Z7 with his favorite 100-400mm lens, plus a 24-70mm for people, and an iPhone when kayaking.

19 Nov 2025 Themes Shadows & Open: Gary

Gary shared some wonderful images he took on his frequent road trips. An Antelope Canyon photo in b&w shows the fluid texture on the sandstone walls sculpted by flowing water. Some other great b&w images of old stage coach adobe buildings in great light for the shadows theme. A sunlit cliffside reflection in water, turned sideways to create an abstraction. He’s been suggesting a low tide tidepool meetup and shared a photo agumented with an octopus to create a more interesting still-life. Lastly, he shared an Anza-Borrego b&w photo of a bare tree at sunset with wonderful clouds in the sky.

15 Oct 2025 Themes Fall, Scary/Halloween, & Moonrise: Gary

Gary returned from a recent trip to Page Arizona and shared some wonderful images taken in Antelope Canyon. Cathy is planning a trip there so the discussion included tips from Gary on how to be successful photographing the sandstone slot canyon.
Photos from last year’s Dios de los Muertos meetup were also shared for the “scary” theme. We are planning another meetup again this year so stayed tuned for some more festival photos.
He also shared a fall image of fallen maple leaves from a trip to Canada.

17 Sep 2025 Themes Still Life, Flash, Storytelling: Gary

Gary recently returned from a Highway 395 solo excursion with his kayak and shared some wonderful images from his trip. Although he photographed the Sept 7th moonrise under the Coronado Bridge, he preferred his great images of moonset over the Eastern Sierras from Lone Pine. Photographing the moon setting at sunrise is a recent alternative of shooting the moon that we are exploring. A balanced exposure is less challenging when photographing the moon setting at sunrise. Plus it’s westward so it opens up a whole new set of foreground elements, like Mt Whitney. Other images from his trip are always historical, educational and fascinating. He also shared a flash photo taken on film where he had some help illuminating a ship with a flash during a long exposure aka ‘flash painting’.

18 Jun 2025 Themes San Diego Fair, Open: Gary

Gary shared some photos from his recent road trip to Bodie and Yosemite. He also participated in the SD Fair meetup and was so inspired, went back to take more images. He caught some great images of people’s reaction to the rides. Bodie images definitely benefit from being presented as black&white. He also has a rare (in recent years) panoramic image taken from Glacier Point in Yosemite. This road has been closed for quite awhile. He used his iPhone to pan the scenic horizon.
