I’m starting to rely on AI to drum up new & different photographic themes since I’m trying not to repeat myself. So I asked Gemini for ideas and these are some of my favorites. Shadows and their interplay with light are a fundamental theme in photography, especially in black and white photography. Silhouettes and shadows go hand in hand—they are a perfect opposite pairing of photographic themes.
Shadows & Silouettes are not new themes to the group but “Fishing” is – “Fishing”, according to Google AI Gemini, is composing a photo then waiting until a subject enters the frame or something happens. This is another classic technique in photography, particularly street photography. Anticipating action, expecially unexpected action, can make for some unique imagery. Here are this month’s photos:
Barb D – Barb almost always embraces the themes as a challenge. She travels frequently so has many opportunities to apply a theme to her photography. The first two images are sihouettes; next four are shadows; and last three are “fishing”.
Cathy – Cathy is traveling so was unable to attend the September meeting but she did email a great shot from the NE US.
Gary – Gary’s been reprocessing some wonderful Yosemite landscapes and he is generating some fantastic results. He is an admirer and collector of Ansel Adams and it’s rubbing off on his black&white images.
Sharon – Sharon dove into the archives to find two photos, one for shadows, one for silhouettes. Digitizing photographic prints is a great way to preserve and share our film photography & print archives.
Jim – Jim photographed one of his favorite north county location – Mission San Luis Rey. Here, he found some classic columned walkways. At the Mission’s fountain, he “fished” for the image of the black bird stopping for a drink. The other images, silhouetted & shadowed, were from a recent trip to the beach during the heat wave. His grandson, the “fish”, finally exiting the surf silhouetted. The fencing around a beach rehabilitation area made great shadows late in the afternoon.
Bird photos that were overlooked from an earlier trip this year to Sonny Bono Salton Sea Reserve that fit the silhouette theme were “processed” and shared.
The silhouettes of people watching sunset at Zabriskie Point, color & b&w, was an iphone image from Jan this year.
